PUERTO MALDONADO
Capital of biodiversity
Known as the “Capital of Biodiversity”, it is one of the best alternatives to enjoy the Peruvian Amazon, thanks to its proximity to Cusco and its important protected areas: Tambopata Candamo, Pampas de Heath, Bajuaja Sonene and Manú; that make the jungle of Puerto Maldonado a true natural paradise. During the Colony were made expeditions that were under the command of Juan Alvarez and in 1861 the Colonel Faustino Maldonado, crosses the river Madre de Dios in all its extension. Its foundation dates back to 1902. Even with the threat of its ecosystem caused by rubber fever at the beginning of the last century, and the population growth experienced by the exploitation of the gold in the seventies, this privileged region remains one of the most virgin forests of the planet. Currently the place lives on tourism and gold and logging.
