Cusco, the ancient capital of the Tahuantinsuyo Empire, which in Quechua means “navel of the world” is one of the few places in the world capable of pleasing any traveler, whether fond of archeology and history, nature lover or passionate to adventure sports.
It was a mestizo, Andean and colonial city, called “Archaeological Capital of America” and declared by UNESCO as “Cultural Heritage of Hunanity”. It was originally an empire almost as vast as the Roman Empire; the Inca nation was communicated by a system of roads of more than 23,000 km. Cusco was considered as center of the ancient Andean World, in addition to being an important center of pilgrimage and worship. The city was built on a hill, whose high part was occupied by the great construction of Sacsayhuaman, taking the form of the head of a puma, religious symbol of strength. Between two rivers that border the city, the ancient Incas built their palaces, squares, streets and public buildings, which still remain today, gold abounded and was frequently used both for the ornamentation of its constructions, and for its sacred utensils and dress of the Inca.
The conquest gave the city a different look, the Spaniards erected here one of the most beautiful cities in America. The Indian and mestizo masters formed not only a new concept of European art, they created the best and most productive school of art in the New World: The Cusqueña School of Art and Painting.
