AREQUIPA

The white city

Arequipa is located in a fertile valley at the foot of the volcanoes: Misti, Pichu-Pichu and Chachani; is also known as the “White City” because of the whitish color of its houses made of sillar, a volcanic rock that abounds in the area. This city is considered the second most important city of the country, after Lima, due to its economic development and multiple natural resources, emphasizing mainly in agriculture and industry. You can find pre-Inca platforms and irrigation channels that still surprise the world with its operation, real samples of engineering. Arequipa shows splendid colonial buildings, rigorously restored mansions and living traditions that are maintained over the years. The landscapes of this area are recognized worldwide for their beauty and uniqueness, including “The Valley of the Volcanoes”, “The Cotahuasi Canyon” and “The Colca Canyon”, considered one of the deepest canyons on the planet; these enormous gaps in the earth’s crust reveal the entire geological history of this part of the world and, together with this invaluable beauty, highlight its varied flora and fauna, as well as its peaceful and hardworking people.
